“The Bowery in Two Inadequate Descriptive Systems.”
By Martha Rosler.

This is just a sliver of a very cool photo project by Martha Rosler.  The general idea goes that neither language nor images can ever fully be an accurate representation of the experience of something.  Here, she photographed empty booze bottles/cans/etc. left along the Bowery in NYC, and paired each photograph with a few words or phrases we commonly associate with being drunk.A note on this and certain upcoming posts:  I’m taking a great photography class called “Expanded Documentary” right now.  This is why some of my upcoming posts may be a bit divergent from what I’ve reblogged here in the past (i.e., stuff that generally falls in the category”straight photography”).  However, I hope that you, like I hope I am, are open-minded about these projects, and I invite you to keep in mind that there are many ways to think of the term “documentary.”
