Photoset with 4 notes
from “Scopophilia” project
By Nan Goldin
“Scopophilia” is the name of the new photographic project by Nan Goldin, now on view at Matthew Marks Gallery in NYC. ”Scopophilia” means “the love of looking,” for those who were wondering. For this project, Goldin had the rare opportunity to photograph paintings and sculptures in the Louvre. In this show, she exhibits these new photos side-by-side with her own, older photographs. The combination proves to be quite exciting, as your mind cannot help but compare and contrast the images, and draw new conclusions about both subjects.
You even get two ways to go about making these new, relational readings of the images, as Goldin has both traditional prints hanging on the wall (most as collages similar to the images I’ve posted here), as well as a slideshow of all the same photographs, accented by music.
In the press release, Goldin states, “Desire awoken by images is the project’s true starting point. It is about the idea of taking a picture of a sculpture or a painting in an attempt to bring it to life.”
