Thank you Judy Berman and Flavorwire for including me in your article on “10 Rock Photographers You Should Know”. I am honored to be included with such great talent.

I absolutely LOVE this photo by Brad Elterman!  Joan Jett & Sandy West on the Santa Monica Pier in 1977.  How perfect is this shot?  It’s got a genuine candid flavor.  I love how it portrays these rock stars as “just” the teenagers they really are, enjoying the simple pleasure of french fries on the boardwalk, while still indulging their killer fashion sense and striking a provocative pose—just like most teenage girls are wont to do.  Elterman’s shot is genius because of this:  although we still know that these girls are rock stars, we are also shown a more mundane, and perhaps more vulnerable, side of them.  Although the shot looks like it was taken casually, it’s obvious that there was much thought put into this frame; it works so well because Elterman knows just how to delicately handle these two facets of the girls’ lives.
